Sounds to me like it could be the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). If your car is like my 93 245, you can either remove the ECT and test it in a pan of water to see if the resistivity changes with temperature like it should, or you can just test it both cold and when warmed up by probing the correct terminals at the fuel injection computer.
