Dan,

You said "No luck." That's what I think it is too. Unlucky combination of two broken odos.

There's nothing external I can imagine that could kill the odo yet leave the speedo working - just internal mechanics and a few electrics. Mainly the gear. Was your replacement gear new or a pullout? Both units show exactly the same symptoms?
