My mistake, they didn't start encoding the type of paint used until December 1988.

The paint code plate is located behind the RH headlamp on all 85 and newer 700/900 series cars.

78-88 MY cars will have a code NNN-X
88+ cars will have a code such as: NNN-X-Y

NNN is the paint color
X is the paint supplier
Y is the type of paint

If you would like, I can dig up the Volvo recommended materials for whatever company's paint system you're going with.

P.S. In case it's not entirely obvious, I know squat about paint.
