There's a really nifty test in Bentley - and possibly in the FAQs too I guess: It has you putting the OBD into function test mode and cranking the starter.
You'll have to wait until you get power back to your ICU to run the test.
To view the signal in operation you should have an oscilloscope. Not the normal way to test the sensor.
With a multimeter you can measure coil resistance across two of the pins. The third pin is a shield for the wiring. But the way these fail most often is intermittently and shorted at the wiring close to the body of the coil. Here's a photo of the typical problem next to a new replacement.
