Your diagnosis of a bad coil is not complete, the coil is probably not bad. The coil's plus terminal receives 12V with key on. In addition the negative must receive a string of timed pulses from the ignition system to trigger the high voltage output side.
More likely causes are power stage, crank position sensor.
