How can I rule out a faulty ECT?

Disconnect it. the open circuit will fool the ECU into thinking the engine is cold. If it then starts normally then you know the problem. However as it warms up of course it will run very rich and very poor so therefore it is test only, not a solution. The ECT rarely fails.
