You are right... 200 1992

...about those american switches. I used to seethose cheap things break all the time. Except when they break, the brake lights stay on all the time.

As for my problem, to update:

I managed to remove the brake switch and it works fine. I tested that red can thingy and that happened to be the problem. I wish I checked that first (oh well, live and learn). Local dealer wants $149 for it. Groton want $52 for it. I guess I'll wait till tuesday for it to arrive from CT.
