proper clutch cable? 140-160 1972

Indeed, 164 clutches are rather heavy compared to 140s... But I have noticed significant improvement by getting a little oil into the cable housing from the top. Not easy, but an oil can with a long narrow snout should do the trick.

If that helps, then it means the cable is on the way out, and you can plan on replacing it soon.

As for the length, I don't know. But a 164 definitely has a much shorter cable than a 140. Pretty much goes straight from under the front of the pedal box directly to the bellhousing. If yours looks like it loops around near the distributor or something, it may well be a 140 cable, and that could indeed make for a stiff clutch. It should pretty much take the shortest path from the pedal to the bellhousing.\

What sort of car did you drive before getting the Volvo? Perhaps you just aren't used to it yet...
