Ok -- more information. Apparently the oil leak which I fixed a while ago by replacing the oil pressure sensor had lasted long enough (with previous owner) to rot out the bushing which the idler arm fits into.

The mechanic had told me I needed a new idler arm. Good thing they aren't available from Volvo (for $350), because that made me think. I actually only need a new bushing. It's not like the idler arm itself is bent or anything. So for $30 it should arrive next week.

Have to remember to think before ordering parts.
