When diagnosing 'weird electrical problems' I always start with the ground.

Brute-force check method is to use half of a set of jumper cables. Attach one black clamp directly to the negative battery terminal, the other to the the engine. You are making a very good temporary ground. If the problem resolves itself you know your ground is iffy.

If it does not resolve itself you can pretty much rule out the ground.
