Not to sound arrogant, but another trick an import mechanic told me they use to get the shims free, is to shoot a little blast of compressed air underneath them, where the notch is on the side of the shim cylinder...they pop up like that!

As for the problem with the car, I can say that from experience, an exhaust manifold gasket leak can sound a LOT like a valve tick. a sharp "pup,pup,pup"
type of sound is what you get...rule that one out before you get on the shims.
