For the North American market the only 4-cyl that had an interference design was the "16-Valve" offered in some 700 and 900 models (B234F?).
But Bentley is correct about valve shim removal...even on non-interference engines the piston should be moved away from TDC, as it's possible to depress the bucket/valve far enough to hit a TDC piston.
I usually check valve clearances at timing belt renewal. It's easy to rotate the camshaft with the belt off, and not have to turn the engine over. This is not a problem with our 2-valve-per-cyl engines.
