Any air that enters the intake downstream of the carburetors will wreak havoc with engine performance. If air can get through the observed crack/hole in the intake manifold, then performance should suffer all the time and not just while starting.

Was the car hard to start before the plugs and air filter were changed? Does it run fine now after you get it started?
