I had this happen too. We had a back yard indie fix it, and a family member spray painted the handle. After the old handle was given to me, I suspected that the broken part could have been replaced by the part on the new handle and the old painted handle kept in use. I didn't explore further, but I suggest you do this after obtaining a replacement handle.
