Don't listen to those guys. I have a 93 and had the same frustration. I solved it by installing one of the optional folding arm rests that have a cup holder that slides out of the front. Also installed two of the folding cup holders (very similar to what iPD sells). Here's a link to a cup holder similar to what I bought:

Installed the cup holders on the doors, just under the window. Looks like it belongs there.
