What is different about the radiator supports between the years? Are they different heights?

I was under the impression that the radiator supports stayed the same throughout the years. My radiator support has lots of extra holes in it where the pre-'86 headlight frames would mount, but they are unused with the later style. I figured Volvo picked one style of radiator support in the early '80s and stuck with it, adapting later parts to the pre-existing holes.
