Evan's explanation is spot on. However, I always hated those type jacks, too many times I found that the top of the jack wound up rubbing on the paint.

So I looked on eBay and found a nice sale and bought a scissors jack and handle. Now I would just scrounge through a junkyard. I beleive that the scissor jack is more stable.
