That they are too wide is not quite true.

The owner of the 165E (245 with a 160 front end!) has successfully installed seats from a 960 in his 240 (passenger compartment).

It required cutting and welding and some other work, but if you really want those seats to go in your car, they will fit. They just need to be modified. I'm guessing it's way too much work for the casual mechanic, like me.
