Late model tail light assembly conversion

I had a 1980 244 GL and I changed the tailights using a nice used set from an 86 240. They bolted right up--worked fine. I was under the understanding that as long as both side-pass and drivers side were the same vintage--they would work as 85 and earlier used a different ciruit board then the 86 and up and as long as both sides have the same curuit board-they work.
