Mr. Green? Would that be the nefarious Shayne Green, AKA Schoen Groen among
the northern Europeans?
I had not given any consideration to changing a late grill to an early one on
the 164, however Professor Volvo (Duncan LaBay, I believe, contributor to
Rolling Mag and officer in VCOA) recently sold a 74 164E with that modification
made on it so he should be able to verify what seems to me to be true.
The one later 164 that I used to have, "Righteous", which was stored in
Charleston, SC during part of the time that I worked and lived in Panama,
and was used for cross-country vacations, met an untimely demise due to a
nearly-thrown rod near San Simón, Arizona, about 35 miles from nowhere on
Interstate 10, was later towed to Yuma (all the way across the state)
and later crushed after being mostly stripped. So I don't have a car
on which that mod could be done. "Righteous" was a 73 164E.
I would say that any salvage that has a 69-72 164 whose front end is intact
should be able to furnish the parts you need. Don't know much about the
great northwest but Mr. Green probably does.
The 1975 164E had D-Jet fuel injection and the 1975 B30 distributor as used
in the 164E is equipped for both electronic ignition and D-jet triggering.
I have one in my garage and as soon as my third distributor in my 164
(285,000 miles over 35 years, of which I have had it 33) starts to give
problems, I will go electronic. But like in my decision to sell the
3-carb downdraft rig I had, it may not be too soon because it is just
doing too well right now with what it's got, with the exception of the
heater fan and the power steering, which blew the steering column seal a
couple weeks ago. A friend has offered me another steering gear so I can
switch in haste and repair at leisure, as soon as it shows up.
But enough blather. I trust I have appropriately dealt with your queries,
but if not, stay on my case. Have a great and blessed new year!
