OK, got this one solved:
The problem was in the dreaded Bulb Failure Warning Relay! Red cylinder under driver's dash. I had already replaced this, but with a used one from a yard. The used unit solved some of my lighting problems but turned out to have it's own problems. When I replaced it (with a NEW unit from Groton, $50) I was good to go, EXCEPT I also had to replace the burned outfront parking bulb.
Hope this info can help others.
