I tried the " count the thread " trick once as well. It cost me a nice front set of Bridgestone's really quick- like 2000 miles. I suspect you have the wrong toe. So what may be happening is the wheels line up correctly and then you get this darty feel. The rest of the time, they are scrubbing pretty bad. You can set you toe yourself, simple tools and some time. Just don't wait till you have ruined your tires.
