Thanks for the advice. Sorry to be vague in my description. The "not feeling right" was a combination of wondering where my timing should be and adjusting new carbs.

I used the "advance it 'till it pings" method today; I was able to advance the timing about three more degrees. It gave me a bit smoother idle and a very nice smooth acceleration, with no pings, backfires or any other issues. I'm pleased and will leave it alone.
