Hello,
I have a 1988 760 turbo wagon with 209K miles that has just developed an extreme vibration in the front end when going above 40 MPH or so. It seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel area. I should note that my front strut cartridges are in need of replacement, but I haven't experienced the extreme nature of this vibration until last night. It feels like the wheel is out of balance (really out of balance - bouncing up and down). The tires have recently been balanced and the car does not pull when driving or when the brakes are applied. The ball joints, outer tie rod ends, and strut rod bushings had been replaced by the previous owner about a year ago (10,000 miles). Lug nuts are tight. Any ideas where I should start? I'm thinking possibly the front wheel bearings or the strut finally completely giving out. What would cause this in just one wheel? Is there a clear way to diagnose a bad wheel bearing? I'd hate to replace the hub/bearing assembly due to the high cost. The Haynes manual has a section adjusting the wheel bearings by replacing the hub nut and properly torquing it.
Thanks a million!
Pat
