240 Hood Catch -- how to release?

This is correct- you'll be able to reach it behind the front spoiler. you do need something long, but it can be done. Helps if someone also pushes down on the hood a bit at the same time.
You want to push the catch towards the driver's (left) side of the car. I had one with a broken cable that had a big tie-wrap added to pull the latch, through the grille. You can leave the grille out for now, too, for easy access till it's fixed.
