I think that the first thing to check would be the tailshaft bushing. Reach under the car and move the shaft at the transmission flange. If you've got play, then replace the tailshaft bushing. I've not had a bad carrier bearing in any of the high mileage 240s or 740s that I have worked on, but it is a place to check also.
