You can usually do it without a puller but a puller is nice. Some of us have
made flimsy pullers with 3/8" carriage bolts and a small triangular piece of
plywood. Grind the heads eccentric but round so they fit through the holes
and have a lip to grab the back of the gear. Drill the holes in the plywood
a trifle small so the bolts don't turn too easily.
Drill a 3/8" hole in the center and screw a 7/16" bolt into it to push against
the shaft and with some finagling it will pull the gear right off.
No, it's NOT pretty and it DOESN'T look professional but it DOES work.
The gear is not on there very tight.
As soon as you get the new gear on to where you can engage about 1 thread
of the nut, you can pull it into place with the nut. Very light tapping will
usually accomplish this but you gotta keep the gear straight on the shaft.
If it gets cocked it won't move and your tapping may push the soft plug out
the other end behind the flywheel. You didn't want to take off the flywheel
to put in a new one, right?
