The "trickery" George refers to can take many shapes. I have heard of, with the piston at TDC, using compressed air to keep the valves up, or feeding a flexible cord in through the sparkplug hole till the cumbustion chamber is really filled up tight. But I'd follow his other sugestions first before getting involved with the valve seals.
