IPD Intank Pump Conversion 200 1981

Well, I did the conversion, and it worked for me! You may recall from an earlier post that the '81 245 was developing a missfire problem, then started dieing at stops. Turned out the relatively new in-tank pump was working, but not delivering enough fuel to the main pump. After I did the original in-tank replacement last year, the main pump was still making a lot of noise, so I guess the problem was longer in the making than I had realized. Since the main pump was noisy when I got the car, I just lived with the noise.

With the higher capacity in-tank pump, I can't hear the pump anymore, and the 245 has been restored to life. Not only that, but I washed and waxed the car after I was done and that made it rain! (Hard to believe, but Western Oregon has been short on rain this year. Southern California has been trying to steal our water for years, looks like they got it this year ...)

IPD discourages the use of a hacksaw to shorten the delivery pipe (the new pump is longer than OE), but I was reluctant to bend the pipe enough to clear a tubing cutter. Even then it was a pain to cut, I couldn't figure out a way to clamp it while I sawed it off. This also involved removing the flared end of the tube, but the hose seemed to clamp down on the smaller diameter part of the pipe okay. But for now, I'm a happy camper!
