Re-reading this thread, I realized I had not answered the question in your post.
No, the failed FPR, when shaken vigorously, shows no evidence of loose or rattling parts inside.

I will "autopsy" the unit when I have a bit of leisure time, and see what makes her tick. Maybe I will discover a nice little nugget of information...if so, I will post the cause of failure.
