V90 Overheating

Need help with a diagnosis...
Drove my Volvo v90 wagon about 10 miles when I noticed steam coming from under the hood. I stopped the car and checked the engine.
No anti-freeze appeared to be leaking (from hoses or other places) but the anti-freeze overflow tank was very full and boiling.
The car was recently serviced with a complete 90k service inspection.
When I started the car back up, the gauge came on for overheating the heat indicator was in the RED.
After a couple more minutes of driving, another indicator light came on the dash.
I stopped the car and let it cool down before returning the 10 miles or so to home.
Any ideas what might be causing this problem. Can I drive it 45 miles to visit some friends?
Is the problem the water pump? Any ideas. Thanks.
Wally
