OK thanks guys, I found the problem... let's just say that it was one of those caused by the mechanic, in my case myself...

one of those I am embarrased to further discuss :)

Moral of the story, however improbable, if POSSIBLE, then that is the cause.
It was ignition timing related... like most of you suggested.
