Nope. The transmission is completely mechanical with the exception of the overdrive solenoid which is controlled by a relay behind the glove box. The speedometer is electronic, the signal more or less comes from a toothed gear in the rear diff.
There are probably two different problems at work here. Dirty connection at the diff, maybe a broken wire, busted speedo, bad circuit board on the instrument cluster. Failed OD relay, failed OD solenoid, misadjusted (or busted or stuck) kickdown cable.
