Immediate Help needed for a '90 740GL 700 1990

4-3-1-2 on the cap is indeed the correct wiring order, so what you are finding is that only a couple of cylinders are firing when you change it to 1-3-4-2. That's why the idle is bad.

Check that you have a spark at each plug: the wires may have been pulled too hard or have a fault. Was there any carbon or oil in the old cap? If so, clean it out with a rag and some rubbing alcohol.
