"Viscosity is measured in cST (centristokes) at 40 and 100 degrees C. The higher the number the thicker the oil."
Well according to your chart the 5W30 is thinner than the 10W30.
"The owner's manual chart clearly shows 5w40 is good from well below freezing all the way to 96 degrees. That covers every climate I know of. Im sure the synthetic 5w40 can even hadle temps up to 110 degrees if needed"
The Volvo chart says up to 86F not 96. I live in North Carolina where temps in the summer usually exceed 86F and often even 96F as it does in so many other US locations. If the spec says up to up to 96, 86, whatever how can you be "sure" it handles temps up to 110F.
I think your thin oil/thick oil hypothesis is somewhat flawed. Perhaps you have read to much opinion and speculation at Bobs Oil Guy site. Your experience with your own car may be due to other factors. For me I will stick to what Volvo and Mobil recommend. Besides I don't drive a deisel.
You do understand that oil designed for a colder environement is thinner not thicker.
