Glove box differences - 200

that I encountered when I assumed they were all the same.

Before 1986, the key system had a separate key without black head covering that went to glove box and trunk. 1986 and later have one key that fits all locks, and the glove box lock was changed. (There is also a "valet" key that does ignition but not glove box or trunk.)

All the boxes (up to 1988, anyway) have a place for the push-button electric trunk release that was found on 1985 and older sedans as an option or std in a GL. The switch can be removed and placed into another box, takes drilling a hole.

The newer lock is larger diameter and won't fit the hole in the old door. The newer locking bar is farther back into the box, and won't work well with an old box without rigging up a way to "move" the lock point on the box top.

The doors are interchangeable. The hinge pins can be driven out easily, and another door fitted.

Best way is to get a box from your same year. That way you can swap the locks and so your existing key can still work.

Good Luck,

Bob
