Yes, knowing Russian in New England is a big help in learning their language because both languages have the letter "R" backwards!
I have 2 modes of operation when dealing with these folks up here. I mainly operate on #1, but when communication fails I go to secondary mode. See descriptors below:
1. Pretend to understand them and copy their use patterns for the letter "R" by deleting and adding the letters at random intervals:
i.e. Car=caa plaza=plazr saw=sar tar(asphalt)=taa
2. Speak only Russian everywhere and pretend to know nothing and appear to be angry all the time.-wear a continuous constipated grimace on my face 100% of the time. This tends to scare them away...
This is the only way I survive being a Arkansas to Massachusetts transplant.
