Alternator brushes go out in 10K miles???

Perhaps the Rotor that the brushes lay on are really beat up. Maybe some sections were missing so it was chopping away at the Brushes instead of riding on top.
That might be your noise. Could be pieces of the Brushes laying between the Rotor and the stator.
