Every time I have an engine out I install a drain valve.
You can beat the mess by siphoning out the radiator and then when you pull the
thermostat housing, if you have a piece of 1/4" OD plastic tubing you can
siphon the rest of the engine through the front of the head. The tube will
fit through coolant holes in both head and block so you can get it nearly
to the bottom of the water jacket. While you are doing this you should have
the tube full of coolant and your thumb over the other end.
