They can also be 180 degrees apart with #1 at TDC - but #1 will be in the middle of the exhaust-intake cycle, not ready to fire.

Just so he knows that the 180 degrees thing isn't necessarily a problem - just turn the motor around one revolution and make sure they then do line up.
