Oh, that just triggered a thought. Maybe it is a sticky vacuum retard on the distributor. Try unplugging it and seeing if the idle is more even. ack when I had mine hoked up it was rather sticky and sluggish - it would have a fast idle for a little bit until the vacuum slowly retarded the timing and slowed it down.
