Your theory is most plausible. Wonder if its worth paralleling with existing brake lights for added illumination. Got my replacements from e-bay, also website address is www.lampsandlenses.com (Somewhere in NJ i think).
Had one broken, figured I'd change both at that price. Huge difference in clarity. Old ones were heavily oxidized. Klaus.
