Today my 89 740 suddenly lost power and would only run at idle speed. I pulled over and the check engine light came on. Turned the car off and checked the fuel inj /radio supression relay. It felt hot but since it hangs on the radiator fill tank that may have been the reason.
I pulled the connector off the relay and inadvertantly shorted a couple of wires together for a second or two before getting them separated. It burnt the insulation of the black ground wire for several inches. Luckily I had a spare relay in the trunk and carefully put it back together. The car ran fine all the way home. When I opened that relay expecting to find evidence of burning I did not see anything amiss>>>
The black ground wire got half fried as the copper strands were broken leaving only about half of them intact. I used electrical tape to insulate it and the car seems to be running fine. Do I need to get a new spade connector and cut and spice a better ground wire?
How do I reset the check engine light? I did not find anything in the FAQ's explaining the procedure.
thanks,
Maui
