random overdrive light activation... 700 1990

I'm sure someone has delt with this. I drive a 1990 740 non turbo, and every so often it will kick into overdrive, with the light on, not down shift to 4th gear, and stay stuck for a while. pressing the upshift button on the shifter does nothing, and sometimes pressing it will get it stuck in upshift.
I have tried unpluging the switch, under the chassie, but that only leaves the motor in 3rd all the time.
help??
