I don't get it 140-160 1973

The name seems to be a misnomer to me too Al. I think that the gas vapours are removed from the air filter box and inlet upstream of the throttle plate to prevent an over-rich condition hot, but it isn't really a "hot start valve", more a part of an evaporative emission system. I will have to track down what Volvo calls it and what SU calls it.
Too many carbs on the bench awaiting rebuild for that right now.
