More specifically, the reverse gear is a straight cut gear and should not have any thrust loading on it. Perhaps (as Phil says) the detent ball or spring on the selector shaft is not strong enough (or missing) so that the lever "falls" out of reverse under its own weight.
Another possibility is that the laygear thrust bushes (washers) are severely worn and the layshaft is moving fore and aft as you apply throttle. That "may" be enough to allow the tranny to pop out of reverse.
I'd put in a whole different tranny unless you can address the reverse issue on your current one. Getting those thrust bushes/washers is a hen's teeth proposition!
