Since you are WAAAAAAAY out of warranty there's no problem with opening it up. My guess is that a shot from a can of dry air and replacing the itty-bitty grain'o wheat bulb in there will fix-er up. It may also be a real component giving up the ghost, it so you can still exercise one of the previously mentioned options.

I'd also look in the yellow pages under radio repair... you never know.
