Backfire Problem 140-160

My 140 is backfiring occasionally, but it seems to only backfire when the engine is warm, and only through the exhaust. The idle is also unpredictable, sometines at 800, other times at 2000 with a warm engine. I'm not sure if they are related. I have an electronic ignition system, the timing is fine, and the plugs and wires are brand new. No performance losses, just the backfire. Do I need a new coil? Maybe rotor and cap?
