possible engine damage? 200

My friend the motor engineer tells me that continous running (for hours) above 4000 rpm really hurts most engines designed for a max rpm of about 6000 rpm. This is because the internal wear increases exponentially with rpm. A few secs at max rpm could then perhaps correspond to a few minutes running at, say 4000 rpm, continously. Maybe it is like calculating how much one cigarette may shorten your life? However, revving the engine every morning to warm it up is probably like smoking a pack a day??? Some engines may die suddenly (heart attack induced by smoking) whereas some just age away sooner than expected.

Excuse the allergory, but this is the way I try to see it when I race some guys at the red/green light.
