If the 02 sensor is dead or not functioning, the ECU defaults to run rich. So an indication can be a decrease in gas mileage. It can also be higher emissions during the smog test. You can check the O2 lead (single wire black) plugged into the green lead (ECU) for voltage while warmed-up (well) and idling. Should be about 0.5 V while connected or disconnected from the ECU. You should also see the voltage fluctuating while connected. There are additional tests that can be run to check the 02 sensor's response to lean and rich conditions. The FAQ has detail.
